Are Divorce Courts Anti-Dad?
Written by divorce3 on July 15, 2008 – 10:10 pm -The headline of this post comes from Parade Magazine of July 6, 2008. There was a small law article on needed changes in the divorce courts when dealing with dads and the custody arrangement.
Shared custody has been changing and moving toward helping dads over the last several years but it still is not perfect (nor may never be). Around 50-percent of divorced fathers lose contact with their children after a divorce. 50-percent! Here is another percentage to think about, 85% of divorced fathers only are awarded visitation just two weekends a month plus a few hours a week. These statistics come from Mike McCormick of the American Coalition for Fathers and Children.
Jennifer Rosato of Drexel University School of Law claims that a new trend is very possible which may change the custody rules concerning fathers and children. The big problem is that courts are much more interested in money then they are family (or common sense: my note). So dads get shortchanged as it is assumed by the courts that they father doesn’t want as much custody as the mother. But what is happening now will probably change as custody is being looked at under a ”proportional time” system. Ms. Rosato says that proportional time takes a look at how much time per day the father was typically spending with the kids and allots custody time according to that.
This makes more sense because many dad’s now are taking care of the kids, by themselves, as many hours or more than the mother.
